Whenever we get a call from a person, requiring a particular blood group, we check our database, and try to find blood donor with the same blood group, in an area nearest to the person in need. After that, we pass the contact details of that person to the person in need of blood.
Process of finding a blood donor on Sakshum:
  • Enter the search criteria by filling in the blood group and your location.
  • If the donors are available, note down the contact details of the POC (point of contact)
  • Contact the POC, giving him the required details.
  • The POC, will provide you with the contact details of the blood donors.
  • Inform the POC about who amongst the provided donors agrees to donate blood.
  • Also inform the POC in case the contact detail of the blood donor is invalid (eg if the tele.number does not exist)

Note: Contact details of blood donors are not provided on the website, but are provided by the POC (the POC is not the actual blood donor).

Eligibility for donating blood is as follows:
  • Age should be between 18 and 60 years.
  • Minimum hemoglobin count should be 12.5gm.
  • Pulse rate should be between 50 and 100 per minute, without any irregularities.
  • Blood pressure should be, Diastolic 50 to 100 mm Hg and Systolic 100 to 180 mm Hg.
  • Body temperature should be normal and oral temperature should not exceed 37.5 degree Celsius.
  • The person should weigh 45kg or above.

You should not register as a blood donor or donate blood in case of following:
  • If you have undergone any treatment for rabies or received Hepatitis B immune globulin within the past one year.
  • If you have donated blood or have been treated for malaria within the last three months.
  • If you have undergone any immunization within the past one month.
  • If you have consumed alcohol within the last 24 hours.
  • If you have undergone any dental work or taken aspirin within last the 72 hours.
  • If you are HIV+.
  • If the person is suffering, or has suffered, from cancer.
  • If the person is suffering from any blood clotting disorder, such as hemophilia.

At one time, type O negative blood was considered the universal blood donor type. This implied that anyone — regardless of blood type — could receive type O negative blood without risking a transfusion reaction. However, even type O negative blood may have antibodies that cause serious reactions during a transfusion.
Ideally, blood transfusions are done with donated blood that's an exact match for type and Rh factor. Even then, small samples of the recipient's and donor's blood are mixed to check compatibility in a process known as crossmatching. In an emergency, however, type O negative red blood cells may be given to anyone — especially if the situation is life-threatening or the matching blood type is in short supply.
Similarly, the blood group AB- is said to be the universal recipient as it is possible for the person of AB- group to receive blood from any blood group in a condition of extreme emergency and necessity.

  • The contact details (e-mail address and phone number) of the voluntary blood donor are kept confidential in order to prevent information abuse. The contact details of donors can be obtained by requesting the Sakshum POCs (Point of Contacts). Sakshum Point of Contacts (POCs) share blood donor details without any discrimination and free of charge to anybody who seeks donors for a particular blood group in a particular area.
  • Sakshum does not arrange for blood. We only provide relevant information about potential donors to those in need of blood.
  • Sakshum does not have a blood bank and is not affiliated to any blood bank.
  • Sakshum does not guarantee that a potential donor will agree to donate blood whenever called upon to do so. It is entirely at the discretion of the individual whether or not to donate blood.
  • Sakshum does not claim that potential donors are free from any disease, ailment, or bodily conditions preventing them from donating blood at the time when they are contacted for blood donation. Onus is completely on the individual looking for blood to verify these details from the donor.
  • We urge you not to make false registrations if you do not seriously wish to donate blood. It is a matter of life and death for those in need of blood in an emergency or otherwise.
